Karen, Marco, and Hannah will represent Kids’ Chance across the country
Hannah was five months old when her father was injured in the line of duty and rendered a paraplegic. Years later, she became Kids’ Chance of Nevada’s (KCNV) first scholarship recipient.
Hannah is a member of the 2024-2025 Kids’ Chance Ambassador class. While each of our kids has a different path to Kids’ Chance, most of our supporters share a common catalyst: they got involved with Kids’ Chance because they heard one of our kids share their story.
The Kids’ Chance Ambassador program taps scholarship recipients who embody the heart of our community to share their stories across the country.
Karen and Marco join Hannah to complete this year’s Ambassador class.
Karen wanted to be an Ambassador to reach more kids and families in situations similar to her own. “So that way, they know their kids have a chance. And the kids themselves know that they have a chance to continue in higher education.”
Karen is a Kids’ Chance of Maine (KCME) scholarship recipient whose father was injured when he fell off a ladder at work. He ultimately passed away. “My dad used to be this guy who was — I saw him as just all-powerful, this man who was so strong. And the accident turned him into a shell of himself. All he wanted to do was work. He loved to work. And he could barely be on his feet. He could barely walk around. It looked like it was painful. And there wasn't —
“I just wish somebody could have helped him.”
Many people in Marco’s community in Alabama don’t go to college. “It's just kind of crazy to think that as good as my life is right now, I didn't really know that it was possible. Kids’ Chance [helped me] get an education, be able to go very hard on my studies, and set up myself to have a great future.
Like Karen, he wants to share his story to help more kids. “I'm honored to be an Ambassador first and foremost to be able to share my story and get this out there to as many people as possible so more people know that just because you have a couple of hardships in your life, it's not over. You have another chance to make something of yourself.”
Hannah has not only gotten her undergraduate degree; she’s working her way through law school. At first, she thought Kids' Chance was too good to be true. Communicating with volunteers and finding out that she would receive a scholarship changed everything.
“I was like, holy smokes. That is half of my tuition per semester. I think I cried and called my mom. And I was like, you're not going to believe this.”
