Recap: Fundraising Strategy Movers, Shakers, and Shifts

On November 17, 2020, Sherry Quam Taylor led Fundraising Strategy, Movers, Shakers, and Shifts, as part of our Give Back Better Series. Sherry is the owner of QuamTaylor and focuses on showing nonprofits how to move into a sustainable funding model so they can scale and grow. This engaging webinar focused on creating stronger unrestricted fundraising streams. She used 2020 as an example of the importance of this purpose, encouraging the state organizations to not only think of events as the main source of funding.Sherry explained how donors often do not hear enough about the true need and impact. Organizations should focus on creating a true "need" based budget that can be used to clearly explain:

  • The impact the donation is making or will make
  • How the donation will scale the work and help more people
  • The big picture and long-lasting impact

5 Key Concepts

  1. Become comfortable with spending money to make money.
  2. Budget, budget, Budget - Focusing on creating a real "need" based budget.
  3. Move into deeper relationship fundraising to ensure the donor becomes a long term supporter.
  4. ROI - Don't settle for events that yield low dollars.
  5. The high majority of gifts come from individual donors.

The goal with this type of fundraising is to lead donors to make their best gift and doing this annually. These gifts will be easier to secure if you are able to lead donors through a conversation of your organization's need and the impact. In summary, when you approach your donors with what you need, share your budget, show impact, and walk them through strategies, you can cultivate a relationship that will net you larger gifts.
