The First Annual Kids' Chance of Arizona Run/Walk March 11, 2006

It was a record shattering day – the 143 day drought in Phoenix ended with an inch plus of rain in a driving rain storm! At the same time that the Phoenix St. Patrick's Day Parade, the Scottsdale Arts Festival, and the Chandler Ostrich Festival were cancelled, the First Annual Kids' Chance of Arizona Run/Walk in Kiwanis Park Tempe, Arizona took place!

Over two hundred plus runners signed up for the Run/Walk and about one hundred stalwart runners and walkers braved the high winds and rain storm in the early morning hours of March 11, 2006 to Run/Walk in the first successful Kids' Chance of Arizona Run/Walk March 11, 2006.

Amidst family cheers, the runners and walkers completed the course (which had to be re-routed because of the flooding and rains from the early morning drought-ending storm). Nonetheless, it was a successful event that will be remembered for the breaking of the 143 day drought and the First Annual Kids' Chance Run/Walk.

Many runners from SCF Arizona completed the course and many other volunteers from SCF Arizona and other groups arrived at the site in the dark hours of the morning to help with registration.

Mr. Duane Miller, Chief Operating Officer of SCF Arizona, accepted an award on behalf of SCF Arizona, the largest workers' compensation insurance company in the state, as the course sponsor.

Mr. Jim Stabler, Vice President Legal/General Counsel of SCF Arizona and a runner with a sub 29.00 time, not only led the race for SCF Arizona participants but accepted an appreciation award on behalf of Mr. Don Smith Jr., President of SCF Arizona.

This event was made possible through the below list of sponsors and the hard work of the Kids' Chance of Arizona Board. Notably, Mary Cost, board member and representative of the Flight Attendants Union AFA-CWA US Airways, Council 66, took off her volunteer patch and then became a last minute runner and completed the course.

A Grand Prize Raffle sent the soggy runners home with cash prizes!

Kids' Chance of Arizona salutes the hard-core running community and the stalwart volunteers and runners who participated in this event. We look forward to your participation next year in the Second Annual Run/Walk.
